This year’s W3 Awards have been announced and we’re pleased to congratulate The Philadelphia Foundation for receiving the Gold Award in the Category of Website – Charitable Organization. The Philadelphia Foundation’s commitment to the community is inspiring and their new digital properties allow them to align more closely with the needs of both donors and recipients.
Who is The Philadelphia Foundation?
The Philadelphia Foundation takes pride in being a community foundation. Their mission is to help improve the lives of the citizens in a community through grantmaking and investment so that localized solutions are available for organizations and individuals that need it. Additionally, they offer resources and counseling for nonprofits.
Through this work, The Philadelphia Foundation is able to increase the philanthropic impact of local organizations and offer financially secure resources to these groups. They are a bridge between donors and nonprofits, helping both sides to make their charitable dollars as impactful as possible.
Established in 1918, The Philadelphia Foundation has worked for the community for more than 100 years. Beginning as a charitable trust, their focus on community-based philanthropy has facilitated connecting causes and organizations with the people who care.
In that time The Philadelphia Foundation has enabled change and brought focus on important issues while establishing themselves as leaders in the region. Through their relationships with organizations and donors, The Philadelphia Foundation has awarded nearly $475 million in grants and scholarships.
Along with the more than 6,000 nonprofit and charitable organizations in the Greater Philadelphia Region, The Philadelphia Foundation works to create opportunities for prosperity and access to public assets. They provide scholarships to potential leaders and access to a variety of resources for nonprofits and causes across the region.
How Technology Enables the Mission
As The Philadelphia Foundation began its second century as a community foundation, they saw an opportunity to improve how they interacted with their audiences on both sides of the charitable equation. The foundation was ready to create a new image and at the same time embrace digital as part of their strategy.
The work began with a refresh of the foundation’s branding, creating a new look and feel that would ensure they projected a forward-looking image to donors and organizations alike.
Once their rebranding efforts were kicked off, The Philadelphia Foundation reviewed their digital properties, like their website. They knew that their website could be a powerful asset in their mission and that it would need to be changed to match their new branding.
More than that, however, the foundation understood that their new web presence needed to be dynamic, visually and functionally. Their goal was to build a digital asset that would improve outreach to the community, encourage givers, empower the community, and simplify access for organizations.
Doing this required a flexible framework for the website to reside on that allowed foundation staff to make updates and changes as needed. Curotec helped The Philadelphia Foundation achieve that goal with a site that offered space for information, donors, and the community that they serve.
The foundation also understood that in their next century as a force for empowerment, they would need to meet donors where ever they were. Offering a modern and streamlined mobile experience was proof that The Philadelphia Foundation was prepared for what the next 100 years would bring.
As they look forward to the future, The Philadelphia Foundation continues to embrace digital as a means of connecting with the community. Recently, the foundation leveraged their digital platform to engage nonprofits and citizens in voting for deserving organizations for their Key to Community grants.
Nine organizations were chosen in the initiative and each received a portion of $1 million in grants. An online platform permitted individuals to vote once per day to choose deserving organizations to be awarded the grants and could be accessed via a mobile website on a traditional web browser. Citizen were even offered a list of locations with free wifi or computer access to guarantee the largest number of voices would be heard.
While not part of the award, the Key to Community initiative further cemented The Philadelphia Foundation’s commitment to enabling access to as many community members as possible through their digital platforms.
